The Silver Box idea comes from the book called
"Silver Boxes" by Florence Littauer's. The heart
of the message that this book offers is basically that the
things we say have a great impact in people's life. Positive
words will build a healthy self esteem in an individual, while
harsh words or lack of positive words will wound a person
for a lifetime. So, "Silver Boxes" are those compliments
or words of encouragement we give to people. They are those
beautiful and precious gifts that they will treasure in their
heart forever.
On Christmas of 2005 I was wondering what
to give as a present to my husband. It seems that he had everything.
I was looking to give him something unique, something from
my heart, something that will tell him how much I love him
and to be honest - something he couldn't return or find a
better version online. So I knew I had a challenge in front
of me.
Weeks earlier my mother in law gave me a
CD with Florence Littauer's message. While I was remembering
her preaching I understood that the best gift I can give to
anyone, in this case, my husband, was "words of encouragement"
and "compliments". So I decided to jump in a new
venture. I wrote an e-mail to his closest friends and family
members asking them to write me back a compliment for him.
I ask for something meaningful, something from their heart,
but I also asked to keep it short, not longer than 5 lines.
I explained to them the Silver Boxes message and I told them
that I was going to gather every word that they were about
to send and place it in a beautiful card that will go inside
of a silver box that I was going to make. Everybody was very
enthusiastic about the idea and very honored to be part of
something that he will keep and treasure forever.
I built a silver box, made the cards, printed
the messages, and there I have the "perfect gift"
in front of me: something from my heart and from our friends
and family's heart. Something he will never imagine to receive
and something that he could not take back.
Christmas eve came and I was anxious to give
him my present. We sat by the tree with our 8 month beautiful
daughter. He ripped the paper out, opened the box, read the
first 3 or 4 cards containing the messages, but he was totally
silent, he didn't give me eye contact, not a word ....I was
starting to think that once again I haven't been able to WOW
him with my gift. A few minutes later his eyes became watery,
I came closer to him to give him a hug, and all of the sudden
I had my husband crying like a little 5 year old in my arms....The
words of everyone who participated in this gift touched him
in a way that I'd never thought possible....He looked at me
and said: "This is the
best gift I have ever received in my life." As you
can imagine there are no words to describe how I good I felt
knowing that I was giving him something so great in his eyes.
That's how everything started, since then
I have given Silver Boxes to family members and I can tell
that by the power of these words and this gift their lives
have been totally changed.
Words are powerful, but more powerful is
to have the honor to compile a "Silver
Box" for those you love and see their lives change.
